Namibia: Desert Roads & Wild Places

From Windhoek to Windhoek

Tour Overview

Namibia was made for a road trip. Vast horizons, quiet gravel roads and ever-changing landscapes make getting from place to place every bit as memorable as the destinations themselves.

This 10-day adventure combines the freedom of a self-drive with some of Namibia’s most memorable guided wilderness experiences. Take the wheel of your own 4x4 and journey from the towering dunes of the Namib Desert to the wild Atlantic coast and the rugged landscapes of Damaraland. Along the way, expert local guides take over where it matters most, leading you into remote wilderness areas to track desert-adapted black rhino and elephants and discover a side of Namibia few travellers experience.

Stay in carefully chosen camps and boutique accommodation, enjoy plenty of time to explore at your own pace, and experience the wonderful sense of freedom that comes with having the open road ahead of you.

And if you love the itinerary but would rather leave the driving to someone else, the entire journey can also be arranged as a fully guided private safari.

This is Namibia your way – wild, wonderfully remote and made for adventure.

Day 1
Hosea Kutako International Airport Windhoek

Welcome to Namibia!

On arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, you’ll be met by a representative before taking the complimentary shared shuttle into Windhoek.

Once in town, it’s time to get ready for the adventure ahead. You’ll collect your 4x4 and receive a detailed self-drive briefing, covering the vehicle and the practicalities of driving through Namibia. You’ll also receive a welcome snack pack to get you started.

Your home tonight is Galton House, a stylish, relaxed guesthouse that makes an easy introduction to Namibia. Ultimate describes it as an urban retreat designed to provide a comfortable transition into a Namibian journey.

The rest of the day is yours. Relax after your flight, get your bearings and enjoy your first evening in Windhoek – tomorrow, the open road awaits.

Day 2
Windhoek Camp Sossus

After breakfast, load up the 4x4 and set off on your first real Namibian road trip.

Leaving Windhoek behind, the city soon disappears and Namibia begins to reveal what makes self-driving here so rewarding: vast horizons, quiet roads and landscapes that seem to grow bigger with every kilometre.

Your destination is the Namib Tsaris Conservancy, on the edge of the Namib Desert and within easy reach of Sossusvlei.

Tucked into a naturally formed granite amphitheatre, Camp Sossus is deliberately small, remote and wonderfully connected to its surroundings. Rather than simply providing somewhere to sleep, the camp is designed around an immersive wilderness experience – getting out into the landscape with knowledgeable guides and experiencing the desert beyond the usual viewpoints.

Settle into your luxury tent and enjoy your first evening in the Namib. With very little between you and the wilderness, this is a fantastic place to appreciate just how quiet the desert can be.

Day 3
Sossusvlei & the Namib

An early start is well worth it today as you head out to discover Sossusvlei, one of Namibia’s most extraordinary landscapes.

Set within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, Sossusvlei is a landscape of enormous red sand dunes, pale clay pans and almost impossibly blue skies. It is Namibia at its most iconic – but standing amongst these immense dunes is quite different from simply seeing them in photographs.

Your stay at Camp Sossus includes shared camp activities and your Sossusvlei fee, so today’s explorations are taken care of.

Beyond Sossusvlei itself, Camp Sossus offers the opportunity to experience the wider desert environment of the Namib Tsaris Conservancy. Ultimate Safaris' experiences here can include nature drives, walks, stargazing and exploring the conservancy, with activities shaped by conditions and the interests of guests.

Return to camp later in the day and enjoy another evening beneath Namibia’s enormous desert sky.

Day 4
Camp Sossus Swakopmund

After breakfast, say goodbye to the Namib and continue your self-drive adventure north towards Namibia’s Atlantic coast.

It’s a wonderful transition. The warm colours and rugged scenery of the desert gradually give way to the cool, misty conditions of the coast before you arrive in Swakopmund.

With its German colonial influences, cafés, restaurants and seaside setting, Swakopmund feels quite different from anywhere else on the journey. After several days surrounded by desert, there’s something rather fun about suddenly finding yourself back in civilisation.

Check into Brigadoon Boutique Bed & Breakfast, where you’ll stay for the next two nights.

The rest of the afternoon and evening are free to explore at your own pace. Wander through town, stretch your legs along the waterfront or find somewhere for dinner and enjoy the relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Day 5
Explore Swakopmund

Today is completely yours to enjoy.

You can spend the day exploring Swakopmund independently or make the most of its position between the Atlantic Ocean and Namib Desert by adding one of several optional adventures.

For a taste of the coast, head out on a marine dolphin cruise followed by a beach braai on Pelican Point.

For a bigger day out, the optional Mola Mola Day combines a marine cruise and beach braai with an afternoon 4x4 adventure into Sandwich Harbour, where enormous dunes tumble towards the Atlantic.

Alternatively, take to the water on the Crystal Kayaking Experience, travelling by catamaran to Pelican Point before kayaking amongst the seals in clear kayaks, enjoying a beach braai and returning via a mini 4x4 dune adventure.

Whichever way you spend it, today offers a great change of pace before you leave the coast tomorrow and venture back into the wilderness.

Day 6
Swakopmund Damaraland

After breakfast, point the Fortuner north and leave the Atlantic coast behind.

Today you’re travelling into Damaraland, a wonderfully rugged region of dry river valleys, rocky outcrops and immense open spaces. It feels wild and remote – exactly the sort of country that makes Namibia such an addictive place to explore.

Your destination is the Onduli pickup point, where you’ll leave your vehicle and meet your guide for the journey into Camp Doros.  The transfer itself is part of the experience, taking you deeper into the wilderness towards your home for the next three nights.

Perched above an ephemeral riverbed surrounded by mopane trees, Camp Doros is deliberately small and intimate. Its focus is less on conventional lodge luxury and more on experiencing Damaraland properly – on foot and by vehicle, in the company of people who know this landscape exceptionally well.

Settle into your luxury tent, take in the silence and enjoy dinner beneath the vast Damaraland sky.

Day 7
Tracking Desert-Adapted Black Rhino

Today promises to be one of the real highlights of your Namibia adventure.

Damaraland is home to an extraordinary population of free-ranging, desert-adapted black rhino, surviving in this harsh and largely unfenced wilderness. Camp Doros sits within an important rhino area and works alongside experienced Rhino Ranger teams to track these remarkable animals.

Head out with your guides and trackers in search of signs of rhino movement. Tracking wildlife here is about far more than simply ticking off a sighting. Following tracks and reading signs in the landscape gives you an insight into the animals, the environment they inhabit and the conservation work that allows them to continue roaming wild.

The exact shape of the experience is dictated by nature – and that's very much part of its appeal.

Return to camp later in the day with time to relax, swap stories around the campfire and enjoy another night in this wonderfully remote corner of Namibia.

Day 8
Desert Elephants, Rock Art & Damaraland

You have another full day to discover Damaraland, and there’s plenty more to experience.

Today enjoy an elephant tracking experience and a visit to the area's rock engravings.

The desert-adapted elephants of north-west Namibia have learnt to survive in an extraordinarily dry environment, travelling through ephemeral river systems and across huge distances in search of food and water. Heading out with guides who understand their movements gives you the chance to search for these giants while learning more about the challenges of wildlife conservation in such an arid landscape. Ultimate Safaris specifically highlights searching for desert-adapted elephants in Damaraland’s ephemeral river systems as one of the region's signature experiences.

Later delve into Damaraland's much older human story through its ancient rock engravings.

Back at Camp Doros, enjoy one final evening in the wilderness. With virtually no light pollution, take a moment to look up – Namibia’s night skies can be every bit as memorable as its landscapes.

Day 9
Damaraland Windhoek

After breakfast, it’s time to leave Camp Doros and reconnect with your vehicle for the journey south to Windhoek.

This is your final big driving day, taking you from the rugged wilderness of Damaraland back towards Namibia’s capital.

Part of the joy of a Namibian self-drive is watching the country change through the windscreen, so settle in and enjoy the road. After days of dunes, Atlantic coastline and remote wilderness, arriving back in Windhoek brings the journey almost full circle.

Tonight you return to the familiar surroundings of Galton House.

Relax by the pool, enjoy a well-earned drink or head out for a final dinner and toast an incredible Namibian adventure.

Overnight at Galton House including Breakfast

Day 10
Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport

Enjoy your final breakfast before returning your vehicle at Galton House.

From here, you’ll join the complimentary shared transfer to Hosea Kutako International Airport in time for your onward flight.

Ten days, one 4x4 and a rather impressive collection of landscapes later, your Namibia self-drive adventure comes to an end.

Safe travels – or, as we prefer to think of it, until next time!
