Day 1
Arrive in Windhoek

Arrive in Windhoek, the vibrant capital of Namibia – a country the size of France but with a population of only just over 3 million people. The city showcases modernity and a great deal of history, the perfect place to start your southern African adventure.

On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel, a distance of approximately 50km.

This afternoon we will do a short city tour to view some of Windhoek’s highlights, from colonial-era architecture to the bustling streets and townships, all combine to give you a taste of Namibia’s culture and atmosphere.

Tonight, we dine at the iconic Joe’s Beerhouse, where local cuisine and international favourites meet in a lively social setting (own expense).

Day 2
Windhoek Etosha National Park

Rising with the African sun, we enjoy breakfast and then begin our journey northwards toward one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations – Etosha National Park. Our route takes us through wide-open plains and numerous small towns and settlements, offering glimpses of rural Namibian life in this vast semi-desert like environment.

En-route, enjoy a pic-nic lunch prepared from the trucks impressive kitchen.

By late afternoon, we arrive at Taleni Etosha Village, our accommodation for the night, here the contrast between desert landscapes and abundant wildlife sets the tone for the adventure to come.

Day 3
Etosha National Park

Today is your first full immersion into the unique ecosystem of Etosha. After breakfast at Taleni, we enter the Park for a full day of game driving, searching for the iconic wildlife that makes Etosha legendary. From Elephants and Lions to rare species like black-faced Impalas and Black Rhino, the park offers an unparalleled safari experience. The Drifters truck with its huge opening windows, elevated seating and spacious comfort is the ultimate vehicle for traversing this spectacular wildlife haven.

Lunch is served on the truck during the drive, or at one of the stops, allowing you to maximize your wildlife sightings without missing a beat. After a day filled with adventure, we overnight at one of the Parks camps and enjoy a Drifters-prepared dinner under the African sky.

Day 4
Etosha National Park

Wake to the sounds of the bush and enjoy breakfast at camp before embarking on another exciting day of game viewing. Guided game drives take you to waterholes where animals gather, offering intimate encounters and photographic opportunities. The park’s landscape changes with the light of the day, from morning mists to the golden glow of afternoon, providing a perfect backdrop for your safari. On occasion, we may just sit at a waterhole and observe the many animals coming down to quench their thirst.

Lunch is again served en-route, and dinner is prepared at camp, relax and reflect on the day’s wildlife encounters.

Day 5
Etosha National Park Ruacana (±365km)

A morning game drive out of the Park provides one with the last opportunity to spot wildlife before we continue north. Departing Etosha, we travel northwest through typical Mopaneveld and to Ruacana Falls where the lazy Cunene River tumbles down into the desert on its long journey to the Atlantic Ocean, this stretch also marks the border with Angola. We stop at the impressive Falls and marvel at the dramatic setting.

Lunch is enjoyed at the Fall’s and is then followed by a border crossing into Angola at this remote post.

Once done with formalities, we travel some distance into the desert to our first wild camp, an amazing experience of being alone in the bush. Dinner is prepared on the fire as we enjoy the evening, fall asleep to the sounds of nature under the vast African sky in the Angolan desert.

Day 6
Ruacana Oncocua

Waking with the rising sun, we enjoy breakfast and then journey deeper into Angola, traversing remote landscapes that few have seen. Along the way, observe the traditional lifestyles of the nomadic tribes that have for centuries lived in this seemingly inhospitable environment. Lunch is served from the truck to keep the adventure fuelled.

Arriving at our camp near Oncocua in the late afternoon, we may have the opportunity to casually interact with people from the Vatuas, Muacahova, and Himba tribes who use this site as a meeting and trading area – this offers a rare, uncommercialised cultural immersion. Tonight the camp is set amidst open plains, giving you a true sense of being off the beaten track. Dinner is enjoyed at camp under the stars.

Day 7
Oncocua Lubango

After breakfast at camp, we make our way up the escarpment to the highland city of Lubango, passing through scenic valleys, subsistence farmlands and mountains. On entering the city, we make a stop to admire the Christo Rio Statue (one of three in the world) and to enjoy the panoramic views from this elevated position. A striking monument and iconic viewpoint.

Tonight, we indulge in comfort at a well-appointed lodge in the city offering a welcoming swimming pool and comfortable rooms and dining areas. Dinner is at the lodge restaurant (own expense) and offers the first opportunity to indulge in the unique cuisine that is a result of a fusion of Portuguese and African flavours. Enjoy a rest and recharge for the many adventures ahead.

Day 8
Lubango Colinas Hills

Starting our day with a visit to the magnificent Tundavala Gap which offers breathtaking views from the edge of the escarpment over the endless plains which stretch all the way to the coast below, we then begin our descent, visiting the Thirstland Trekker Graves en-route for a short historical insight into these pioneer farmers who crossed the Kalahari to make this area their home.

A highlight this morning is to view and to then descend the scenic Leba Pass with its 12 distinct hairpin bends that take us back into the deserts of the coastal plain.

Lunch is enjoyed from the truck en-route. This afternoon we truly enter the sands of the Namibe Reserve where we will set up camp amongst the hills and canyons of this remote area.

Dinner is enjoyed under the starlit sky, a unique experience in this stark yet stunningly beautiful environment.

Day 9
Colinas Hills Soba Beach Lodge

After enjoying breakfast and then packing up camp, we make our way through the sand, back to the coast for a short stop and walk at the coastal port of Mocamedes. We then continue our journey along this remote and rugged coastline up to Praia Do Soba, the magnificently situated lodge where we will spend the next two nights. Lunch is enjoyed from the truck.

Soba Beach Lodge is truly unique, scattered accommodation built right on the edge of a rugged peninsula that towers above the Atlantic Ocean below. Hidden stairways, coves, rock formations and beautiful beaches surround. The accommodation here varies with cabins having 1,2 or three rooms, most sharing bathrooms, but the exquisite environment more than makes up for any inconvenience.

Meals at the lodge are comprised mostly of locally sourced seafood and are cooked on an open grill, an incredible culinary delight.

Dinner is served at the lodge, allowing you to relax and enjoy the sound of waves.

Day 10
Day at leisure at Soba Beach

Take a full day to explore this paradise of deserted beaches, coves, and desert landscapes, on foot at your leisure, or simply relax at the Lodge and take in the views.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the lodge, including an array of local seafood.

This day provides the opportunity to rest, reflect, and to re-charge right at the edge of the Ocean.

Day 11
Soba Lucira

After a relaxed but sumptuous breakfast, we travel a short distance back into the rugged desert terrain before continuing north along the coast toward Lucira, a small, rural fishing village where we will enjoy a light truck lunch on the beach.

This afternoon we embark on a local fishing boat for a trip across the bay to Gruta da Santa, Angola’s version of “The Blue Grotto”. En-route we hope to encounter any of the magnificent marine life that is attracted to these extremely nutrient rich waters – Dolphins, Whales, Turtles and many more species occur here. Please note that this activity is weather dependant and will not be undertaken should local conditions not permit.

Dinner is enjoyed at the beach camp, whilst soaking in the sunset and tranquil surroundings.

Day 12
Lucira Lobito

Again, making our way inland, after a leisurely breakfast and swim in the ocean we depart Lucira and journey through the fifth largest city and commercial centre of Benguela before making our way to the small holiday town of Lobito, we will stop en-route for a snack lunch. Our hotel tonight is in the festive Restinga neighbourhood and the afternoon is free to explore – beaches, historic buildings, harbour, coffee shops, beer gardens and other attractions.

Day 13
Lobito Rio Uiri

After a leisurely breakfast and indulging in the freshly baked pastries, we continue northwards into a more tropical area of vegetation and landscape. Our journey today takes us back into the highlands and our lunch stop is at the Binga Waterfall where the Keve River tumbles down onto the vast floodplain below. We then continue inland and through richly forested and banana plantation covered hills to our destination on a working Coffee and Banana farm – a completely different environment to what we have experienced in Angola thus far.

This evening, enjoy a farm-style dinner served in a historic barn and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

Day 14
Rio Uiri Farm

A full day to immerse yourself in the workings of a remote African coffee and banana farm – walk the grounds, meet the staff, participate in a guided tour, relax at the swimming pool, hike and explore the surrounding area, or simply relax, all at your leisure.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are provided at the farm, giving you a full experience of Angolan rural life.

Day 15
Rio Uiri Pedras Negras

Feeling relaxed, we depart the farm after breakfast, for the remainder of the climb onto the highland plain. We will stop for lunch today at a little local restaurant – Candimba in Quibala, where we will dine with the locals.

Continuing our journey, we travel on good roads almost all of the way to Pungo Andongo, an area characterised by massive granite monoliths that rise way above the surrounding savanna. Until besieged in 1671, this was the Capital of the Kingdom of Andongo. This afternoon, or in the morning, explore the unique Black Rocks on foot. (birders will be on the lookout for the many lifers that occur here).

Tonight, we will camp Wild at the base of one of the giant monoliths. Dinner is served at the camp, rounding off another adventurous day.

Day 16
Pedras Negras Kalandula

After breakfast, take a walk in this natural beauty before we travel the short distance to what is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this journey, the magnificent Kalandula Waterfalls’. A Waterfall practically the height and width of the more famous Victoria Falls but different in that Kalandula sits almost untouched by tourism.

We will explore to our hearts content and will enjoy lunch served from the truck at the viewpoint virtually under the spray of this natural treasure. After taking in the view from the western side, we travel 45km around to the eastern bank and to our camp for the night which is alongside a local hotel, and which offers a stunning swimming pool with exceptional views over the Falls.

We spend the evening watching the Falls and the light fades and the day draws to an end.

Day 17
Kalandula Cuanza

Begin the day with breakfast at Kalandula Camp before loading the truck for the last scenic drive south towards Luanda and the Cuanza River mouth. Along the way, enjoy the changing landscapes of Angola — from rolling hills and lush farmland, we descend from the highlands and into almost surreal valleys filled with giant Baobab trees, bypassing the Capital, we travel south to the coast and to the mighty Cuanza River mouth. Lunch is provided en-route

On arrival at the lodge near the river mouth, settle in and relax in the tropical surroundings after the long drive. In the evening, enjoy dinner at the lodge (included), reflecting on the adventures of the past two weeks and preparing for the final day of exploration.

Day 18
City Tour of Luanda

We enjoy an early breakfast before setting off on a boat trip up the Mighty Cuanza River, this trip takes us to the virgin forests teaming with birdlife etc – truly a magnificent sight. Returning to the lodge, we pack the truck and set off on our last day of sightseeing.

On our way into the City, we will discover some of the rich history and vibrant culture of Angola’s capital: visit the Slave Museum, the Miradouro viewpoint, and if possible, a successful Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre – depending on their availability.

Lunch is at a local restaurant during the tour (own expense), giving you another taste of Angolan cuisine. In the evening, enjoy a celebratory dinner at a city restaurant (own expense), toasting the incredible journey you’ve experienced across these two fascinating countries.

Day 19
Departure

After breakfast at the hotel, your adventure concludes. You will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight. Take with you unforgettable memories of deserts, wildlife, rivers, beaches, cuisine, and of course the vibrant culture.

Arrive in Luanda

Arrive in Luanda, the vibrant capital of Angola – a city of contrasts where colonial architecture meets modern skyscrapers, and a bustling port sits alongside peaceful beaches. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel.

This afternoon is at leisure to relax, settle in, and begin absorbing the energy of this vibrant city. Later, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, sampling Angolan cuisine alongside international favourites (own expense).

Day 2
City tour of Luanda / Cuanza

Explore the bustling streets of Luanda and immerse yourself in the city’s rich tapestry of history and culture. Discover the stories of the past at the Slave Museum, then ascend to the Miradouro viewpoint for sweeping panoramas of the coastline and urban landscape.

Later, set out on a boat trip along the mighty Cuanza River, where the lush riverbanks are alive with birdlife and the calm waters offer a serene contrast to the city. If conditions allow, a visit to a local Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre provides insight into the region’s conservation efforts.

Lunch is enjoyed at a local restaurant during the tour (own expense), before returning to the lodge to relax and reflect on the days discoveries.

Dinner is at a restaurant (own expense), allowing time to soak in Cuanza’s unique atmosphere.

Day 3
Cuanza Kalandula

Rising with the morning sun, we load the truck and begin our journey inland, venturing through landscapes that shift from gently rolling hills to expansive plains dotted with small settlements and winding rivers.

The countryside offers a glimpse into the rhythms of rural life in Angola, where communities maintain traditions in harmony with the land around them.

Midway through the day, we pause for a truck lunch, allowing time to stretch our legs and soak in the views of the vast terrain stretching to the horizon. As the afternoon progresses, the scenery becomes increasingly remote, Baobab filled valley’s hinting at the wonders that await at Kalandula.

By late afternoon, we arrive at our campsite, an ideal spot to relax and absorb the beauty of this seldom-visited region.

Dinner is prepared by the Drifters Guides, enjoyed under the stars as the evening settles over the countryside, giving a perfect introduction to the adventures ahead.

Day 4
Kalandula Pedras Negras

After breakfast at camp, we take time to view the magnificent Kalandula Falls from the eastern side before travelling around to the western bank for a walk and further viewing.

Lunch is served from the truck en-route. In the afternoon, explore the unique Black Rocks on foot, marvelling at these massive granite monoliths rising from the surrounding savanna.

Dinner is prepared by the Drifters guides and enjoyed at camp as the day draws to a close.

Day 5
Pedras Negras Rio Uiri Farm

Awaking in this surreal environment, we depart Pedras Negras and journey southward into Angola’s lush highlands. Along the way, we pass through small rural villages, tropical forests, and rolling hills, offering a glimpse into everyday life in this remote part of the country.

Midway, we stop at a small town for a local restaurant experience (own expense) and stretch our legs before continuing through verdant landscapes dotted with banana plantations.

By late afternoon, we arrive at the working Coffee and Banana farm at Rio Uiri — a peaceful haven that contrasts beautifully with the wild landscapes we have traversed.

Dinner is served at the farm, providing a chance to relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings.

Day 6
Rio Uiri Farm Stay

Breakfast at the farm sets the tone for a day of relaxation and exploration. Take the time to immerse yourself in the workings of a remote African coffee and banana farm – walk the grounds, meet the staff, participate in a guided tour, relax at the swimming pool, hike and explore the surrounding area, or simply enjoy the peace, quiet and birdwatching at the farm at your leisure.

Dinner is enjoyed at the farm, allowing you to reflect on the experiences of the day and the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Day 7
Rio Uiri Lobito

The morning begins with breakfast at the farm before we head back toward the coast, passing through lush highlands and descending into the Benguela region.

Along the way, we stop at Binga Waterfall, where the Keve River tumbles onto the floodplain below, providing a refreshing lunch break and a chance to stretch your legs.

Continuing onwards, we reach the small holiday town of Lobito in the afternoon, where the hotel is conveniently located in Restinga for exploring the beach, historic sites, and local attractions on foot at leisure.

Dinner is enjoyed at Luna Restaurant or similar (own expense), offering the chance to sample local cuisine and unwind after the journey.

Day 8
Lobito Lucira

After breakfast at the hotel, we travel along the southern Angolan coastline, passing remote fishing villages, rugged shorelines, and expansive Atlantic Ocean views.

The journey offers a glimpse into a less-traveled region of Angola, with its wild and untouched desert like landscapes. Snack lunch is enjoyed on the truck en-route.

Arriving at Lucira, we set up camp by the beach, where the Atlantic stretches before us. Take time to walk along the shore, swim in the ocean, explore the surrounding area, or simply relax at camp.

Dinner is prepared by the Drifters Guides and enjoyed under the stars, accompanied by the sounds of the ocean.

Day 9
Lucira Soba Beach

Setting off after breakfast at the camp, we travel along the stunning coastline toward Praia do Soba, a lodge perched dramatically on a rugged peninsula above the Atlantic Ocean.

Before departure, weather permitting, we take a local boat trip across the bay to Gruta da Santa, Angola’s version of “The Blue Grotto,” hoping to spot Dolphins, Turtles, and other marine life drawn to these nutrient-rich waters.

Lunch is served from the truck before we arrive at the lodge, where the scattered cabins, hidden stairways, and rocky coves provide a unique and unforgettable environment.

Dinner is enjoyed at the lodge, allowing time to relax and to take in the views.

Day 10
Day at leisure at Soba Beach

Wake to the gentle sounds of the ocean and enjoy breakfast at the lodge before spending a full day at your leisure.

Explore the deserted beaches, hidden coves, and stark desert landscapes on foot, or simply relax at the lodge and take in the expansive views of the Atlantic.

Lunch and dinner are served at the lodge, featuring an array of fresh, locally sourced seafood, giving you the perfect opportunity to unwind and recharge in this serene coastal setting.

Day 11
Soba Colinas Hills

After a relaxed breakfast at the lodge, we travel along the dramatic coastal and desert landscapes via Moçâmedes, enjoying the ever-changing scenery and the occasional glimpse of local life along the route.

Lunch is served from the truck en-route, keeping the adventure fuelled. This afternoon we enter the Namibe Reserve, where a desert walk allows you to experience the stark beauty and unique flora of this remote environment.

Dinner is prepared by the Drifters guides and savoured at the wild camp under the stars, completing a truly immersive day in the African Desert.

Day 12
Colinas Hills Lubango

We begin the day winding through the rolling desert hills before ascending the spectacular Leba Pass, with its 12 hairpin bends offering breathtaking views over the coastal plain below.

En-route, we pause at the Thirstland Trekker Graves for a glimpse into the lives of pioneer farmers who once crossed this region. Continuing onwards, we arrive in Lubango, where the Christo Rei statue provides a striking viewpoint over the city and surrounding valleys.

Lunch is served from the truck along the way, and in the evening we enjoy a relaxing dinner at the lodge (own expense).

Day 13
Lubango Oncocua

Breakfast at the lodge prepares us for a scenic drive through the highlands, stopping at the Tundavala Gap for panoramic views over the endless plains stretching to the horizon. The descent takes us through picturesque valleys and farmlands as we continue southwards toward Oncocua.

A Picnic Lunch is served from the truck en-route, keeping everyone fuelled for the day’s journey.

As we arrive at camp, the remote setting offers an authentic sense of being off the beaten track, and dinner is prepared by the Drifters guides under the African sky.

Day 14
Oncocua Ruacana

Breakfast at camp readies us for a day of exploration deeper into Angola’s remote landscapes. We encounter nomadic tribes along the way, observing their traditional lifestyles and daily routines, a rare glimpse into a world largely untouched by tourism.

Lunch is served from the truck en-route to keep the adventure moving.

Arriving at our wild camp in the late afternoon, we settle in and enjoy a dinner prepared by the Drifters guides, falling asleep to the sounds of the bush under the vast African sky – our last night in Angola.

Day 15
Ruacana Etosha National Park

This morning, we cross the border into Namibia from where we will view the spectacular Ruacana Falls where the Cunene River tumbles into the desert, a striking reminder of the raw beauty of this region.

Lunch is served from the truck en-route as we continue through typical Mopaneveld landscapes toward Etosha.

Arriving in the afternoon, we embark on an introductory game drive in this renowned National Park before settling at camp, where dinner is prepared by the Drifters guides under the vast African sky.

Day 16
Etosha National Park

Wake to the sounds of the bush and enjoy breakfast at camp before setting off in Etosha National Park for a full day of game driving.

Traverse the Park in the comfort of the Drifters truck, with its elevated seating and huge opening windows, allowing uninterrupted wildlife viewing.

We visit waterholes where animals gather, providing intimate encounters and photographic opportunities, while the landscape transforms from morning mists to the warm glow of the afternoon sun.

Lunch is served from the truck during the drive, keeping the adventure uninterrupted.

As evening falls, we set up camp and dinner is prepared by the Drifters guides, reflecting on a day immersed in one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife regions.

Day 17
Etosha Taleni

This morning, after breakfast at camp, we set out once more into the heart of Etosha National Park for another day of game driving.

The vast salt pans, acacia-studded savannas, and sparkling waterholes provide a stunning backdrop as we search for the iconic wildlife that makes Etosha legendary. Enjoy close encounters with Elephants, Lions, Giraffes, Rhino and an abundance of antelope species, all from the comfort of the Drifters truck.

Lunch is served from the truck during the drive, allowing you to maximize your time observing the Park’s extraordinary fauna.

Exit the Park and travel to Taleni Etosha Village Campsite in the late afternoon, where dinner is prepared by the Drifters guides under the African sky.

Day 18
Etosha Windhoek

After breakfast at Taleni, we begin our journey southwards towards Windhoek, taking in the changing landscapes as Etosha gives way to Namibia’s wide-open plains and rolling countryside.

A stop en-route allows for a visit to a curio market, lunch from the truck, provides a chance to stretch your legs and reflect on the wildlife encounters of the past days.

On arrival in the capital city, enjoy a short city tour, highlighting Windhoek’s colonial-era architecture, bustling streets, and cultural landmarks.

In the evening, dinner is at the iconic Joe’s Beerhouse (own expense), where local cuisine and international favourites come together in a lively atmosphere.

Day 19
Departure

Your journey concludes after breakfast at the hotel. You will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight, taking with your unforgettable memories of both Angola and Namibia — from deserts and wildlife to rivers, beaches, and vibrant local cultures.

During the validity period of the published itinerary, conditions may change, roads may be improved or deteriorate, contracted camps and accommodation facilities may change standards, optional activities may become available or be discontinued, new border posts may open, or existing ones may become congested, etc. Drifters continuously monitor all the factors contributing to a successful tour and will amend the published itinerary if circumstances demand or if we believe the change will enhance the tour.
