A little bit about Southern Lights
Witness the world most spectacular lightshow on Earth, the Aurora Australis! Check out our Southern Lights tours including best seller the Southern Lights by Flight departing Christchurch, New Zealand.
Viva Expeditions are delighted to be able to offer a great range of exclusive tours which involve viewing the Southern Lights and night sky. The Aurora Australis or sometimes referred to as the Southern Lights or Southern Aurora is a natural light display in the Earth's sky. Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind.
Our most popular tour is our Southern Lights by Flight which departs Christchurch New Zealand on an Air New Zealand Dreamliner for a 10-hour flight heading south over the Southern Ocean towards Antarctica, aiming for latitudes of 62 degrees south where the Aurora Australis is brightest. Taking off into the night, you will witness one of the world’s most magical natural phenomena. For those wanting to learn more about the Aurora Australis before taking off into the night sky, then join us on our Mission to Aurora Australis Pre-Flight Programme, hosted by the International Antarctic Centre.
If you are looking to see the Southern Lights from land on multiple nights, then check out Stewart Island Aurora Hunters Group Tour! Stewart Island/Rakiura is the southern-most Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world and offers one of the darkest locations to view the night sky and a fascinating place to spot the Aurora Australis/Southern Lights.
