Tanzania Untamed: Crater, Plains & Chimpanzees

From Kilimanjaro to Kilimanjaro

Tour Overview

Venture into the wild heart of northern Tanzania on this unforgettable 13-day adventure, where untamed landscapes, rare wildlife encounters, and rich cultural experiences await — with your safari guided by one of Tanzania’s very best, Charles Matara.

Your journey begins in Arusha, where you’ll settle in and prepare for the adventure ahead. From here, you travel into the dramatic Ngorongoro Highlands, where Charles joins the group. Hike along the rim of the remote Empakaai Crater, descend into the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater—home to an astonishing concentration of wildlife—and meet the proud Maasai people who call this land home.

From there, journey deep into the northern Serengeti, where the drama of the Great Migration unfolds at the Mara River. Experience exhilarating game drives across the open plains and take to the skies at sunrise in a hot air balloon (weather permitting) for a breathtaking perspective over the savannah teeming with predators and plains game.

Next, leave the crowds behind as you fly to Rubondo Island, a hidden gem on Lake Victoria. Here, dense rainforest meets tranquil shores, offering a rare opportunity to track wild chimpanzees, explore the island by boat, and engage with local communities living in harmony with nature.

Throughout the journey, you will be guided by Charles Matara, winner of the 2024 Tanzania Tour Guide Awards, where he was named Best Safari Guide of the Year in addition to top honors for both walking safaris and birding. Charles grew up surrounded by the wilderness, following in the footsteps of his father, a game ranger, and has since risen to become one of Tanzania’s most respected guides. His deep knowledge of wildlife behavior, sharp tracking skills, and engaging storytelling bring the bush to life in a way few can. Guests consistently describe time with Charles as transformative, not only for the animals they see but for the deeper understanding they gain of Africa’s ecosystems and cultures.

Whether you’re chasing the thrill of the Serengeti or the serenity of island solitude, this adventure promises a rare and powerful connection to Tanzania—made even more memorable under the expert guidance of Charles, whose passion, skill, and warmth ensure this journey is truly unforgettable.
