Unique Stay: Jacks Camp
Tour Description
Jack’s Camp is set in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans of Botswana, the remnants of an ancient super-lake that once spanned much of Southern Africa, one of the most remote and awe-inspiring landscapes in Africa.
This unique location, on a one-million-acre private wildlife reserve, offers an unmatched sense of solitude and space, surrounded by the remnants of an ancient super-lake. The camp is easily accessible via a short light aircraft flight from Maun, followed by a short drive across the salt pans to reach the camp.
Described by Jack Bousfield as the "savage beauty of a forgotten Africa," the Makgadikgadi offers a landscape of vast space and solitude, where otherworldly vistas and unique desert wildlife meet the timeless elegance of Jack’s Camp. This blend creates a safari experience unlike any other on the continent.
While the desert may not be known for abundance, the Makgadikgadi surprises with its rare and elusive species. The area is home to desert-adapted wildlife, making it a perfect contrast to Botswana’s game-rich regions like the Khwai Private Reserve and the Okavango Delta. The brown hyena, one of only 8,000 left in the world, is a symbol of this unique ecosystem. Other inhabitants include aardwolves, bat-eared foxes, honey badgers, black-maned Kalahari lions, aardvarks, gemsbok, and meerkats, the latter part of a successful habituation project led by world-renowned researchers.
Reopened in 2021 after a full rebuild, Jack’s Camp honors its original 1940s campaign style while offering modern luxury. The nine guest tents, including seven twins and two doubles, are now 270 square meters each, featuring en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, private plunge pools, and overhead bed cooling systems. The larger mess tent houses the renowned Natural History Museum, a library, an antique pool table, and a well-stocked drinks chest. The iconic nomadic Persian tea tent has also been expanded.
