Tour Description

Challenge. Isolation. Unlimited wonder. It’s not difficult to understand what drew the great explorers to Antarctica. Get an up close and personal appreciation for the challenge of taming the bottom of the world on this 22-day Antarctica cruise to the land that captivated Shackleton and countless others since.

On this Antarctica tour you’ll explore the Falkland Islands and it's vast biodiversity, rugged landscape and charismatic locals. On South Georgia Island you will encounter deserted whaling stations and pay your respects at Shackleton’s grave. On days spent at sea aboard the comfortable M/S Expedition, our lecture program will inform you of all the wonders of the Antarctic circle and humpback whale sightings are common from on deck. Elsewhere on the Antarctic Peninsula, you’ll encounter king, chinstrap and gentoo penguins as well as get close to whales and playful seals from a Zodiac boat while manoeuvring through towering icebergs and massive glaciers. Prepare to be amazed on this Antarctica cruise.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Today is an arrival day. Make your way to the hotel and enjoy the city as there are no planned activities today. A group meeting will be held in the early evening to discuss the plans for tomorrow.

Day 2

Today we embark on the M/S Expedition. The group will depart the hotel together in the early afternoon and the evening is spent on board the ship, sailing southwards for the Falkland Islands.

Day 3-5
At Sea

Over the course of the passage east, become acquainted with the ship. We begin lectures and information sessions to learn the extraordinary human and natural history of the great region we are about to explore.

Day 6-7
The Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands present a rare opportunity to witness the biological diversity and magnificent scenery of the southern islands. Penguins and albatrosses are abundant here, and the Falklands are home to the largest Black Browed albatross colony in the world. You can meet the hardy local inhabitants in Port Stanley, whose colourful houses provide contrast to the long dark winters.

Day 8-9
At Sea

Continuing east we set course for South Georgia Island. Our days at sea are filled with lectures in preparation for our landings. Whale watching is a must - so keep your eyes peeled for the many whales that inhabit these waters.

Day 10-13
South Georgia

Home to many wonders, including Shackleton’s Grave, South Georgia Island has several abandoned whaling stations and is home to plentiful wildlife. A major highlight of this part of the journey is visiting a huge colony of king penguins. Weather permitting we will have four full days to explore South Georgia island.

Day 14-15
At Sea

We change course and head south and sail for two days, retracing Shackleton's route backwards as we make our way towards Elephant Island and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Day 16-19
South Shetland Islands

Now you can experience some of the most unique wildlife viewing and inspiring scenery in the world as you make your first landing on the Antarctic continent. We will attempt two shore landings per day (weather conditions permitting), and encounter weddell, crabeater and leopard seals, gentoo, chinstrap and adélie penguin rookeries, and orcas, humpback and minke whales in the cold Antarctic waters. The peninsula also has a remarkable human history. As the voyage continues we will learn about some of the most significant and dramatic expeditions to this remote corner of the world.

Day 20-21
The Drake Passage

You can spend this time reflecting on our memorable adventure and take in some final lectures as we head back to Ushuaia. Keep a careful look out as this is your last chance to spot whales.

Day 22
Ushuaia Depart

This adventure draws to a close. Enjoy your final breakfast on the expedition ship before saying our farewells as we disembark in Ushuaia in the morning.
