Tour Description

Wayo Walking Camp is a perfect blend of authentic African wilderness and immersive adventure.

Built with a deep focus on a true feet-on-the-ground safari experience, this mobile camp offers guests an unparalleled connection to nature. With a rich history of delivering real African wildlife encounters, it draws everything together into a complete, captivating experience. The camp holds a special place in our hearts, offering an intimate, off-the-beaten-path journey through Tanzania’s iconic landscapes.

The experience here is centered around walking safaris, allowing guests to explore the wild on foot, far away from the typical game-viewing vehicles. The Star Tents, newly designed for comfort, evoke a sense of timeless African safaris. These tents are made from gauze with a fly sheet overhead, so you can wake up to views of the grasses and feel fully immersed in nature. This low-impact camp is mobile and lightweight, enabling access to remote areas that are rarely visited by other tourists. It’s not uncommon for guests to go days without encountering another vehicle in the Serengeti.

ACCESS & LOCATION: The camp's flexibility allows it to be set up in a variety of stunning locations across northern Tanzania, including Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Serengeti. The exact placement is determined just a couple of weeks before your departure, based on up-to-date wildlife reports to ensure the best possible game-viewing experience. Whether you're exploring Tarangire's elephant-rich landscapes, the vast plains of the Serengeti, or Ngorongoro's stunning volcanic scenery, Wayo Walking Camp opens up a side of Tanzania rarely seen by others.

This truly bespoke safari can be accessed via a light aircraft flight from Arusha to a local airstrip, followed by a short drive to camp, or by road, depending on your itinerary.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT WAYO WALKING CAMP: The camp provides seven Star Tents that prioritize comfort while maintaining a minimal environmental footprint. Each tent features either a double or twin bed, complete with 4-inch mattresses, cotton sheets, and duvets. The gauze tents offer spectacular views from your bed, letting you gaze at the stars or take in the surrounding wilderness. Facilities include separate washing areas with bucket showers and simple latrines. Meals are enjoyed around the campfire, where freshly prepared food is served, accompanied by lively discussions of the day’s adventures. The small and intimate camp ensures that every guest feels connected to the landscape and wildlife around them.

ACTIVITIES AT WAYO WALKING CAMP: Wayo Walking Camp is all about connecting with the wild on foot. Guests walk roughly 10 kilometers per day, exploring diverse terrain while accompanied by expert Wayo guides and a national park ranger. Walking safaris begin early, with the camp moving separately to a new location so that it is ready and waiting by lunchtime. The camp’s mobile nature allows for fresh exploration each day, with walks that take you to scenic vantage points such as kopjes, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the savanna.

As the days pass, many guests find that the walking experience becomes meditative, offering a slower pace that allows for deep observation of the intricate details of the ecosystem, from unique grasses and insect life to animal tracks. These extended treks allow you to encounter the big and small wonders of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Tarangire, depending on your location. In the afternoons, shorter walks are offered before returning to camp to relax around the fire under the vast African sky.

For those seeking a change of pace, game drives are available, offering sightings of lions, leopards, elephants, and a wide range of other wildlife. This flexible setup allows for a diverse experience that suits your group’s preferences.

Top Tip: Wayo Walking Camp offers a rare chance to explore Tanzania’s most famous parks without the crowds in treks ranging from 3-14 days. Its highly mobile nature, light footprint, and focus on walking safaris make it ideal for travelers seeking a truly immersive and private wildlife experience.
