Here mountains, fiords & forests combine to create vistas so jaw droppingly beautiful that they have to be seen to be believed.  From wildlife to wineries, glacial valleys to narrow fiords, the South Island offers pure adventure to all travellers.

Queenstown and nearby Wanaka provide excellent gateways to explore this wonderful region and you don’t have to go far in any direction to get your dose of beautiful scenery. Take a helicopter trip to discover the spectacular Milford, Doubtful & Dusky Sounds or perhaps hike one of the Great Walks such as the Milford, Kepler or Routeburn tracks or maybe the less hiked Hollyford Track which all offer breath-taking scenery: mountains, lakes and enormous valleys, a wonder to behold.  For something, a little bit different take a private cruise or fishing tour through the sounds and enjoy perfect silence and privacy in this powerful place. To the west of Wanaka, you will hit the Westcoast, one of New Zealand’s best kept secrets.  This is an untamed natural wilderness of rivers and rainforests, glaciers, and geological treasures. For something, a little different you can head to a high-country station, some only accessible by helicopter.

If you head east you will arrive to Central Otago where Pinot Noir, that most delicate of grape varieties, thrives in these southernmost vineyards.  Here the Otago Central Rail Trail follows the route of the old railway. Cycle from station to station staying at charming, boutique properties, and sipping wine after a nice day’s ride. For something, a little different you can head to a high-country station to experience life on some of New Zealand’s largest farms.

Visit Dunedin, known for its Scottish heritage, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, such as the famous railway station. Explore the stunning Otago Peninsula home to fur seals, sea lions, penguins and the only mainland Royal Albatross colony anywhere. Don’t miss Tunnel Beach, a breath-taking spot. Get off the beaten track and explore the Catlins coast, sparsely populated wild and rugged region in Southland, where you will find rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seas and Hooker’s sea lions.
