Autumn Northern Lights: Greenland to Nova Scotia
Tour Description
Join us on a 15 day expedition cruise onboard the Ocean Albatros, following legendary Norse explorers, from Greenland to the Canadian Maritimes.
Your adventure will start in Nuuk, once the site of the Norse Western Settlement, and venture through the untamed landscapes of Baffin Island, the rugged shores of Nunavik, the towering mountains of Labrador, and the lush forests of Newfoundland, all in one extraordinary expedition.
A thousand years ago, according to the Sagas, Leif Erikson, the son of the famous Viking explorer Erik the Red, embarked from Greenland, following whispers of a distant land to the west. His crew sailed into uncharted waters and first set foot on the rocky shores of a place they named Helluland. Historians believe Helluland (meaning Flat-Rock Land in Old Norse) was likely Baffin Island. From there, Leif continued south and discovered a tree-lined coastline, which he named Markland – the Land of Forests – thought to be Labrador's shores. Two days further south, he encountered a fertile land filled with thick forests, rivers teeming with salmon, and vines heavy with wild grapes, which he named Vinland – present-day Newfoundland. After this monumental journey, Leif returned to Greenland, becoming the first European to set foot in North America, centuries before Columbus.
As we sail, following the course of this legendary route, we will watch the night skies above - with high hopes of witnessing the northern lights dancing above us. We will visit local communities to explore Inuit culture, explore multicoloured towns, breathtaking fjords and glaciers, as well as witness Arctic wildlife and other wonderful sights in the remote shores of the North Atlantic.
