Day 1
Arrive Kigali

On arrival into Kigali, on completion of customs and immigration formalities you will be met at the airport by a representative, who will brief you on your trip and introduce to your safari driver-guide.

You will then be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure

Day 2
Kigali Ruhengeri

This morning, embark on a tour of Kigali City, including a visit to the Genocide Museum, followed by lunch at a local restaurant.

Afterwards, embark on a picturesque journey westward to Ruhengeri, the starting point for Gorilla trekking in Parc National des Volcanos. Ruhengeri, a town located just 25km from the Uganda border, is relatively small, with a population of approximately 350,000 people. The continuous influx of people in this town is quite remarkable. Ruhengeri boasts splendid views of the surrounding volcanoes, and the local population is known for their friendliness.

Day 3
Gorilla trekking

Indulge in an early morning breakfast today before proceeding to the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters.

During the registration process, the park personnel will determine which gorilla group you will be visiting. There are a total of 96 gorilla permits available each day, and a maximum of eight trekkers are allowed to visit any one group. Once the trekkers are assigned to their respective groups, the Lead Guide for each group will provide a briefing on the trekking procedures and the guidelines for behavior in the presence of gorillas. Following the briefing, trekkers will return to their respective vehicles for the journey up the mountain to the starting point.

The duration of the trek can vary from two to six hours or more, especially if the gorillas have moved since the park rangers last located them. Along the way, the guides will make frequent stops to allow trekkers to rest and capture photos. The forest is dense and humid, with no defined trekking paths. The terrain is characterized by hills and steep slopes of the volcanoes, which may necessitate the use of branches, plant roots, and bushes to assist in ascending the steep inclines.

Once you encounter the gorillas, you will have a remarkable hour to observe them. They might be seen feeding on the ground, resting, moving about in the trees, or playing on the branches. Trackers often use machetes to clear vegetation, providing a clearer and closer view of the gorillas. Despite their immense size, these creatures exude grace and tranquility. Witnessing the silverbacks, the mature males, rise and assert their dominance over the territory is a truly awe-inspiring experience.

Afterward, return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon if weather and time permits, you have the option to visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.

Day 4
Golden Monkey trekking

Another exciting day ahead! Today's adventure promises an exciting trekking experience to witness the enchanting golden monkeys. Within the park, you'll find two groups of habituated golden monkeys, each comprising roughly 80 members, welcoming tourists for visits. These monkeys primarily inhabit the bamboo vegetation around the base of the volcanoes and have become accustomed to the regular presence of researchers and visitors.

Much like gorilla trekking, tracking golden monkeys involves small groups of up to eight individuals, who will spend an hour observing these agile creatures once they are located. These monkeys move with grace, leaping from tree to tree, creating a truly captivating spectacle. However, capturing them in photographs may present a slight challenge.

After the golden monkey trek, you'll return to your lodge for a satisfying lunch. The afternoon grants you free time for relaxation or the chance to partake in an optional activity, depending on the availability of time and weather conditions.

Day 5
Ruhengeri Kigali

Today, savor your breakfast before considering an optional activity (please inquire about any additional costs):

Option one - Mkungwa River Canoeing.

Explore the stunning landscapes of Rwanda's Thousand Hills by embarking on a canoe journey down a peaceful river. This brief adventure in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes provides a glimpse of the lively African countryside, featuring small farms. As you glide along the water, you'll be surrounded by a diverse array of bird species (with at least 35 species having been sighted) and may even catch sight of otters. Engage with welcoming local communities and witness their everyday rural life while enjoying some thrilling moments on the water.

Option two - Visit Gorilla Guardians Cultural Village.

Delve into the captivating tapestry of Rwandan culture, society, and its people at the Gorilla Guardian Village. Situated on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri, this unique destination invites you to immerse yourself in Rwanda's vibrant heritage. Originally established by former poachers, the village stands as a testament to personal transformation and a celebration of Rwanda's rich cultural legacy. Experience the essence and atmosphere of this extraordinary community as you embark on a journey that interweaves cultural appreciation with conservation.

In the afternoon, make your way back to Kigali, a journey of approximately 2.5 hours, where your arrangements will conclude upon arrival.

As your memorable journey in Rwanda draws to a close, take a moment to reflect on the incredible encounters you've had with gorillas and golden monkeys.
