South America has many great locations, but the most enticing in Viva’s Experience, the places that shine as most memorable, are Machu Picchu, Rio de Janeiro, the Amazon Rainforest, the Galapagos Islands, and finally Iguazu Falls.   So when is the best time to visit the fabulous highlights of South America.

Machu Picchu

The best time to visit this ancient site is between May and October, when it is dry in the Andes and makes for a more enjoyable experience. Planning is essential when walking the Inca Trail as the temperatures do jump around a bit between night and day. Expect some high fog at times but worry not - this can make for some amazing photos across the valleys. It is good to note that the Inca Trail is closed every February for a yearly clean up.

Rio de Janeiro

Best times to visit Rio are from September to December. Though it is advised to avoid January and February due to the extreme heat (temperatures can rise past 40 degrees Celsius, making sightseeing very uncomfortable), if you think you can brave the heat, and want to experience partying like nothing you have ever enjoyed before, then head to Rio during Carnival for a once in a lifetime experience. No matter the time you visit, Rio is an exciting metropolis offering amazing beach clusters.

The Amazon Rainforest

As is evident by its name, when it comes to the Amazon it is always best to expect rain. While the main rainy season is between January to June, there can also be precipitation in the dry season (July to December). The lush greenery, swollen rivers, and flooded forests makes Amazon River Cruising a perfect option during the wet season while Jungle Lodges are a favoured option during the drier times. The best time to visit in our experience is between mid-May to June.

The Galapagos Islands

Situated as they are straddling the Equator, the best time to visit the Galapagos is between June and November when the tropical climate is at its most cool and dry. Beautiful views with good visibility underwater make the area ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. While this may be the best time it is true that anytime is a good time to visit the Galapagos with year round activity in the islands.

Iguazu Falls

Without a doubt, Iguazu Falls will take your breath away. And they can be visited all year round,  with the best times being between December and February. While during the wonder months it may rain at the falls, the huge volume of water cascading over the 3km face of the falls makes for an impressive spectacle. Our advice? Take a helicopter ride over the Falls to get the full effect.
