Iguazu Falls - Devils Throat Footbridge Re-Opens

Following on from a post we made in August regarding the closure of the Devils Throat Footbridge at Iguazu Falls we are pleased to announce that the footbridge is has now been repaired and re-opened.

On Tuesday, December 23rd the official reopening of the gateways to the Devil's Throat  at Iguazu National Park was held and now travelers once again have access to this incredible view point.

Devil’s Throat is one of the most popular circuits in the Falls Area, whose gateways were damaged after the extraordinary rise of the Iguazu River that occurred last June, which temporarily affected sections of the infrastructure.

The Devils Throat footbridge (Garganta del Diablo) is a 1 km-long walkway across the river that leads you to the top of the largest section of the falls from where the roar and spray are most tremendous.  In June 2014 the area experienced the largest flood ever recorded. Peaking at 47,000 cubic meters per second, and exceeding by more than 10,000 cubic meters per second the water rose 6 meters and caused serious damage. After intense efforts the Upper Circuit walkway has been repaired and reopened but the Devils Throat footbridge remains closed and there is currently no set date for rebuilding and reopening it.

 

More than one million two hundred thousand people a year walk on the Devils Throat footbridge and for this reason absolute safety of all visitors is the main objectives.

The footbridge has been inspected by the National Institute of Industrial Technology, they are reviewing each concrete pile on which the footbridge is mounted to be absolutely confident that once rebuilding begins, this is on solid and safe basis. Once the National Institute of Industrial Technology give approval to the National Parks Administration, a rebuilding plan will be established, at which time we will know when the footbridge may be reopened.

The Iguazu Falls are considered to be the most impressive in the World, surpassing in grandeur  both Niagara and Victoria.  Some 275  separate  cascades fall in a wild array over  a winding  3 km  cliff  frontage into a gorge 60m deep, making it four times the width of Niagara Falls.  Iguazú Falls is one of the top attractions in South America. Luckily with the exception of the Devils Throat footbridge the rest of the attractions are open and operating as normal on both the Argentinean and Brazilian sides of the falls.
