Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Invercargill Oban, Stewart Island

Your journey starts in Invercargill with a flight to Stewart Island

A spectacular 20 minute flight will see us flying low over Oreti Beach, the test track for world record holder Burt Munro, and Foveaux Strait, in a small wing aircraft, a 9 seater
Britten Norman Islander. You will see the forested hills and bays of Rakiura as you come into land, certainly an exciting start to a Stewart Island adventure.

Upon arrival you will be transferred to your accommodation in a well located position overlooking the small seaside village of Oban, that will be our home for the next 5 nights. Comfortable, modern units offer amazing views over Halfmoon Bay or the surrounding native bush. Other features include a fully equipped kitchenette, central heating, electric blanket, plus complementary tea/coffee along with free wifi. There is also a sheltered courtyard with seating and BBQ.

There is some time at your leisure to settle into. Perhaps take a short stroll and enjoy the local area, your guide will be there for any requirements.

This evening we get to know one another over a welcome dinner at the South Seas Hotel, just a short walk from your accommodation and across from the beach.

Later in the evening, and this could likely be one of the highlights, we head out in small groups on a kiwi spotting tour. This tour offers you a special opportunity to experience kiwi in their natural environment. We have exclusive access to private land where New Zealand’s precious kiwi come out at night to feed.

Day 2
Stewart Island

Enjoy waking up to breakfast, and most likely the sound of the local native Kaka birds from your room! Keep an eye out early for a stunning sunrise too - after all you are in Rakiura - the land of the glowing skies!

Then the days of explorations begin by getting to know this charming island and her stories, on a Villages and Bays tour. We will explore Oban and the surrounding bays and our local guide will share their local knowledge and help us gain an entertaining insight into New Zealand’s southernmost community. Stewart Islanders are proud of their island, enjoying its simpler, slower pace. During your tour, there is plenty of time available for photo stops and short walks. Highlights include Lee Bay, the gateway to Rakiura National Park and stunning views of Paterson Inlet from Observation Rock.

The rest of the day is at your leisure. There is so much to do, just ask your guide for any help you may need.

Day 3
Stewart Island

Enjoy breakfast before heading out for a day of adventure on our full day land and seabird tour, including a guided Ulva Island tour.

With a certified member of the New Zealand Birding Network and with over 20 years’ experience, we explore the island and bays by catamaran and on foot. You will love our Pelagic cruise around the Muttonbird Islands to view Petrels, Sooty Shearwaters (Tītī), striking albatross, plus Yellow-Eyed, Little Blue and Fiordland Crested penguins, Terns, Skua, Cormorants and more. Bonus sightings include bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and sea lions. Combined with this, there is time to view our rare and endangered land birds on Ulva Island.

We return late afternoon with some time to relax and have dinner as we choose (own account).

As we go out in small groups for kiwi spotting, there is an opportunity for those who have not yet had this experience to do so this evening.
