Explore the main island of the archipelago , Chatham Island from your base in the main settlement of Waitangi. From here discover the beautiful flora and fauna, and stunning geological features - see hexagonal basalt columns formed over 80 million years ago! While the Chathams may only have a population of around 600, its a place teeming with history. The Moriori arrived in about 1500, and some of their traditions can be witness today in memorial tree carving. Then came the Europeans in 1791 when an English ship was blown off course, followed by Maori from 1835 and German Morovian missionaries in 1843, through to the crayfishing boom of the 1960's... there are countless stories to tell and places of interest to explore. Visit historic sites including Manganui Stone Cottage and Port Hutt fishing village. Perhaps even add a day trip out to Pitt Island - one of the first inhabited islands in the world to greet the new day.

Visit the basalt columns, located on private land in Ohira Bay, these columns were formed from lava flows around 80 million years ago. The area was also once used as a quarry by Moriori for tool making purposes.
Walk through wetlands on the lookout for endemic flora and fauna, visit one of the largest seal colonies on the islands, photograph the rugged and windswept coastlines and explore the local townships - all in a days fun in the Chathams!
Visit J.M. Barker (Hāpūpū) National Historic Reserve - one of only 2 National Historic Reserves in NZ (the other is the Waitangi Treaty grounds). Hāpūpū is where you will find remnants of rakau momori, or Moriori memorial tree impressions.
