Tour Description

Embark on a genuine adventure to the world's most remote wilderness on an Antarctic cruise! Our 11-day Antarctic Classic journey focuses on some of the planet's most impressive wildlife and dramatic landscapes of the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula.

This Antarctica cruise departs from the southern tip of South America across the legendary Drake Passage, and the wildlife spotting begins on deck with whales and scores of sea birds as common companions. The breathtaking scenery of the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula awaits. On several day excursions throughout the Antarctic cruise, you will navigate through the majestic passages and around icebergs and inlets to experience the plentiful wildlife of the area, such as seals, whales and immense penguin colonies.   Opportunities to get up close and personal with the local wild inhabitants are frequent. During our Antarctic expedition, our team of lecturers and guides will share their knowledge of the region's fascinating natural history. This cruise is the ultimate Antarctica vacation.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Ushuaia

Check into your pre-cruise hotel and enjoy the evening to yourself.

Day 2
Embark on ship

Today we will embark on the cruise vessel. Embarkation time is set for 4:00 pm. The morning is yours to do anything you want such as last minute shopping, an optional trip to Tierra Del Fuego National Park or to hike up to the stunning Marshall Glacier. Relax in the evening on board the ship and enjoy the sunset over the Beagle Channel.

Day 3-4
Drake Passage

Crossing the 400 mile passage that bears the name of the 16th century English explorer Sir Francis Drake heralds the beginning of our adventure. This part of the Southern Ocean is where the M/S Expedition feels at home, known for the unobstructed winds that encircle the Antarctic. During the second day we cross the Antarctic Convergence, a point where cold polar water flowing north and warmer equatorial water moving in the opposite direction meets. This mixing of currents pushes nutrient rich waters to the surface attracting wonderful wildlife such as a variety of seabirds, whales and other species. As we continue along the passage you can take your time to become acquainted with the ship and its common areas such as the dining hall, lounge, library and lecture hall and become familiar with our guides, ship’s crew and expedition staff. During the crossing we also begin the lecture and information sessions detailing the remarkable human and natural history of the Antarctic region.

Day 5-8
Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetland Islands

The moment we've all been waiting for is here - a chance to step foot on the Great White Continent! The next four days will be spent navigating southwards making stops in the South Shetland Islands then through the Bransfield Strait and on to the Antarctic Peninsula. The goal of the voyage is to attempt two excursions per day while we travel through the area, however local weather and ice conditions that we encounter will determine our itinerary and daily schedule.

Day 9-10
Drake Passage

Today we leave Antarctica and return north across the Drake Passage. Take this time to relax and review the adventures of the past week before returning to Ushuaia - in between bird and whale watching and enjoying some final lectures by our expedition staff.

Day 11
Disembark in Ushuaia

And so our adventure draws to a close. Farewells are exchanged as we disembark in Ushuaia in the morning. Transfer to the airport or your hotel is included.
